E. Guigal La Turque – Cote-Rotie – Red – 2021:
E. Guigal’s ‘La Turque’: The Northern Rhône Icon
La Turque is one of E. Guigal’s three famed single-vineyard Côte-Rôties, affectionately known as the ‘La Las.’ Sourced from a unique plot on the Côte Brune, its complex soil-silico-limestone with schist and iron-rich clay-delivers a wine of immense concentration and exotic character. It masterfully balances the ‘virility’ of the Côte Brune with the ‘subtlety’ and floral lift of the Côte Blonde due to its 7% Viognier co-ferment.
Tasting Notes: A Symphony of Power and Elegance
- Color: Deep, opaque ruby red with dark, intense reflections.
- Nose: Highly aromatic and powerful, showcasing a complex profile of violet, black cherry, cassis, exotic spice box, graphite, and savory smoked meat/bacon fat notes.
- Palate: Full-bodied and concentrated, yet remarkably graceful. The mouthfeel is almost glycerol, with a core of juicy black fruit framed by fine, polished tannins. It possesses a driving energy and flawless balance.
- Finish: Extremely long and penetrating, leaving behind lingering notes of mocha, iron, and cracked black pepper.
Pairing & Service Excellence
This is an age-worthy powerhouse, best served after a 2-3 hour decant, especially in its youth. Serve at 60-64°F (16-18°C). La Turque demands a dish of equal stature, making it the perfect partner for fine dining and celebratory meals.
