Bertani Amarone della Valpolicella Classico – Amarone della Valpolicella Classico – Red – 2016:
The Iconic Amarone: Bertani’s Timeless Classic
The Bertani Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG is a benchmark for Italian luxury wine. For over 150 years, Bertani has maintained a commitment to a classic style, prioritizing elegance and finesse over sheer power. This iconic red is crafted using the unique appassimento method, where Corvina and Rondinella grapes are dried on racks (aréle) for up to 120 days, concentrating their sugars and flavors to an extreme degree.
Tasting Notes: Power Meets Elegance
- Color: Deep, opaque garnet, evolving to a red-brick rim with age.
- Nose: A fantastic nose of great aromatic dimension. Marked notes of dried plum, marasca cherry, tobacco, and sweet spices (cinnamon, black pepper) with subtle undertones of cocoa and bright coffee.
- Palate: Huge concentration and a velvety mouthfeel define the palate. The juicy dark fruit (damson, cherry jam) is beautifully integrated with structured tannins and a surprisingly refreshing acidity, leading to an extremely long, focused finish.
Pairing & Service Recommendations
This is a serious ‘meditation wine’ meant to be savored, but it also demands a dish worthy of its complexity. Decant for a minimum of two hours and serve at 64-68°F (18-20°C).
- Food: Braised beef ragu with pappardelle, venison wellington, oxtail stew, or slow-cooked game.
- Cheese: Aged, hard cheeses like 36-month Parmigiano Reggiano or powerful blue cheeses.
