Thunevin Calvet Cuvée Hugo – Côtes du Roussillon Villages – Red – 2019:
The Roussillon Powerhouse: Cuvée Hugo, A Luxury ‘Garage Wine’
The Cuvée Hugo from Domaine Thunevin-Calvet is a testament to modern winemaking ambition in a historic terroir. Conceived by the visionary Jean-Luc Thunevin (Château Valandraud) and local expert Jean-Roger Calvet, this ‘garage wine’ from the Roussillon region is a concentrated expression of power and finesse. It is crafted from low-yield, old-vine Grenache and Syrah, grown on schist and clay-limestone soils near the village of Maury.
Tasting Notes: A Rich and Polished Profile
- Color: Deep, saturated purple.
- Nose: An intense and complex bouquet of concentrated black fruits (blackberry, black raspberry), complemented by hints of peppery garrigue, dark chocolate, and a distinctive mineral note of graphite.
- Palate: Full-bodied and voluminous, the wine is powerful yet remarkably balanced. The tannins are sweet, silky, and beautifully integrated after 18 months of aging in foudres and demi-muids, leading to a long, energetic, and spicy finish.
Pairing & Service Recommendations
This is a serious, food-friendly wine. Serve it around 60-62°F (16°C) to unlock its full aromatic potential. Its structure makes it a sublime match for rich, slow-cooked meats and game.
