Château Saint-Sernin Malbec de Silice – Cahors – Red – 2016:
Château Saint-Sernin: The Silky Terroir of Cahors Malbec
The Château Saint-Sernin – Malbec de Silice is a flagship cuvée from the Cahors appellation, presenting a remarkably refined and silky expression of Malbec. Sourced from the unique flinty (silice) soils of the first terrace overlooking the Lot river, this wine trades the grape’s traditional austerity for exceptional elegance and roundness, thanks also to the 15% Merlot blend.
Tasting Notes: A Profile in Depth
- Color: Deep, inky garnet, reflecting the historic ‘Black Wine’ moniker of Cahors.
- Nose: Intense and complex, featuring dominant ripe black fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant) layered with subtle notes of sweet tobacco, graphite, and baking spices.
- Palate: Velvety and rich on the attack. The tannin structure is present but exquisitely fine-grained and silky, a hallmark of the siliceous soil. Perfect balance between fruit concentration, freshness, and minerality. The finish is long and harmonious.
Pairing & Serving Recommendations
To allow the wine to fully express its depth, we strongly recommend decanting for one hour. Serve at 60-64°F (16-18°C).
- Pairings: Smoked BBQ Brisket, Grilled Ribeye Steak with Herb Butter, Lamb & Orzo Stuffed Peppers (Mediterranean-style), Aged Cheddar and Blue Cheeses.
